BIOGRAPHY
First formed a decade ago and coalescing into their current style after bringing lead vocalist Lena on board in 2000, French trio Jabberwock play a fierce and energetic blend of electroclash, industrial, and straight up rock & roll. Inspired both by the electronic aggression of groups like Nine Inch Nails and Atari Teenage Riot as well as the grittiness and glamor of Iggy Pop and the Stooges, the trio, which also includes guitarist Corrado and bassist Xavier, signed with Black Rain Records to release their self-titled debut album, following it up in less than a year with sophomore release Sweet Limbo. Jabberwock are currently planning tour dates, and will perform July 11 at the Dark Castle Festival in their home city of Paris.
INTERVIEW
How are things and how is the band doing these days?

Lena: Well, we are quite busy these days.

Corrado: We just finished our new album, Sweet Limbo. It was very tough. And now we are ready to tour around the world!

Would you tell us a bit about your musical backgrounds, where you all come from, and how you came to form Jabberwock?

Corrado: We started Jabberwock with Xavier about 10 years ago. We started to play with synthesizers and computer music, and then Lena joined us; I think it was around the year 2000. We started to play the kind of music you can hear now about five years ago.

Lena: We have many different musical influences. Personally, I like Nine Inch Nails very much, for instance. And you boys?

Xavier: Of course, there are a lot of influences. I would say from Joy Division to My Bloody Valentine, going through Sonic Youth.

Corrado: Ministry and other bands like that.

Your new album has some very clear influences to it, mainly from electronic and industrial rock. What influences did you have in mind while writing and recording the album, and what kind of overall perception did you want to create for your listeners?

Corrado: There are so many influences that it is too long list, but the main thing is that we had an atmosphere in mind, and this is what influenced us mainly for the writing of Sweet Limbo.

Lena: We have different influences not only in music, but also in movies or paintings, for instance.

Xavier: And I think that the most relevant influence is everyday life. At least on Sweet Limbo, we really are influenced, I think, by the life we lead.

In your opinion, which is the best song ever written and what makes a good rock track?

Lena, Xavier, and Corrado: Now I wanna be your dog!

Xavier: There are a lot of really good rock songs; we are not going to sing them all tonight!

Corrado: Yes, and I think what makes a good rock track is that it has to be funny and dirty at the same time!

Would you tell your listeners, a bit more about the creative process of Jabberwock? How is music created in the band? Do you have one composer or is the process a collective effort?

Corrado: It's in between both, actually. It is either Xavier or I that brings the song initially. Then we complete the music together. In parallel, I write the lyrics.

Lena: And then I bring my own opinion on the lyrics and on the melody, and I give my own interpretation to the song.

As mentioned earlier, Jabberwock has very clear electronic rock influences. What made you fall for the electro/industrial rock scene and what is the best and worst part of playing for the goth and electro crowd?

Corrado: I think our influences and what we express in terms of lyrics and atmosphere make us very appreciated by the electronic and industrial scene.

Lena: Actually, we don't play for a particular audience, but it's true that it's nice to play for them, because they are very open-minded.

With Sweet Limbo on the table, what are your plans for the future? Will there be a tour to follow the album release?

Xavier: Our plans? Play the new songs of sweet limbo on stage, and then for the tour we are booking dates right now, and we have several things planned in France, Germany and Holland, also.

Electronic rock music is a genre known for its controversy and rock star personalities. Who is the dangerous member of the band, and what is the most controversial thing you have done? Have you ever smashed up a hotel room while on tour?

Xavier: Actually, we never smashed a hotel room. We really don't fell the need to do that. What you can do is come and see us play on stage, and you'll see us explode and smash your ass!

Lena: We don't smash hotel rooms; we cannot afford it!

For all the boys in the crowd, does Lena have a boyfriend?

Corrado: For all the boys in the crowd, be very careful, because she's very wild and very, very dangerous!
