This French trio's second album is a step forward, leaving overt '80s influences behind for a more contemporary feel.
Dekad's first album drew on varied '80s influences, from the moody electro-pop of Depeche Mode to the club-oriented gothic rock of Clan of Xymox and The Sisters of Mercy. The French trio's sophomore effort doesn't show quite as much stylistic variation, but Confidential Tears is a much more coherent effort from a band that, rather than still exploring its musical influences, has successfully integrated them. It's also a step forward in terms of production; though '80s influences still show up occasionally on such tracks as the classic-sounding electro-pop ballad "Fool Me," the group seems much more open to contemporary sounds. "Down Below" brings in an epic trance feel; with its soaring synth pads, thumping kicks, and melodic keyboard layers, it wouldn't sound out of place sandwiched between VNV Nation and Apoptygma Berzerk on a DJ's set list. "Next Time" and "Image of You" are likewise modern and accessible, with a more minimalist, groove-oriented approach that recalls Covenant. If Confidential Tears reveals a more groove-oriented sensibility for the band, however, that's not to say that Dekad's talent for bittersweet melody is any less in evidence. Lead vocalist Seb imbues "Dive" with a sense of wistful melancholy despite the song's infectious dance beats and hard-driving bass synths, and his understated approach on "Story" adds a gentle humanity to the richly symphonic synth arrangements. Guitarist Yoyo's contributions are less obvious but no less important, filling out "No Regrets" and moderating between otherworldly synths and an ominous bass line on the appropriately titled "Tension." 2006's release of Sin_Lab was a clear indication of this band's promise; this album is the fulfillment of that promise. Combining thoughtful lyrics, catchy hooks, and dance-friendly rhythm programming, Confidential Tears sees Dekad posed for a worldwide club takeover.
