Freudstein's remixes feel shiny and new while holding on to the darkness within.

Freudstein's Dissected & Resurrected is a selection of songs from their first two albums re-worked by various musicians, producers, and DJs such as Gary Hughes, Dissolved, Ewigkeit, and Swarf (the dissected) as well as Freustein's own remastered remixes (the resurrected). And fortunately, it isn't necessary to be familiar with the original songs to appreciate the remixes. Including only the best collaborations, Freudstein has managed to create something that is definitely worth a listen.

The Dissected songs have much to offer. Their high energy brings a strong dance vibe to even some of the more moody instrumentals, evolving them to something beyond mere soundtrack-worthy background music. What's truly appealing though, is the variety of sound. The first song, "Misadventure" plays like a VNV Nation remix of Depeche Mode, while the second, "Shadows" is a seductive down-tempo piece that will stay in your ears for a long while after the last note has faded. "Return to the Old Forest" attacks with a heavy bass drumbeat that skips from ear to ear, while beneath it plays a terror fantasy tune that captures the innocence and fear found in the most haunting horror films. Glitches and noise further enhance the odd beauty. There are two remixes of "Robots Pt. 2: Murder Spate." The first, Autofire's I Want More remix features a heavy beat and frantic electronic pulses that nearly fade away for the spoken-word style vocals. The second, the Ewigkeit remix keeps the music less distorted and the vocals more integrated. Although you can tell they are based on the same original song, the two versions are as identical as second cousins, offering a hint at their matching DNA, but drastically different in every other way. Many of the songs include well placed sound bites and effects to perpetuate a sinister feeling and the mood carries well through each of the remixes.

Tracks 11 through 15 are the remastered remixes that Freudstein decided to Resurrect. They include remixes of songs originally recorded by Arkam Aslyum, The Chaos Engine, Xykogen, and Swarf. They are okay, and the energy is good, but these five pieces don't match the intensity of the other 10 on the album. They come up a bit shallow, remaining in the safer electronica/house spectrum rather than reaching into the more experimental or industrial sounds. Somehow, other musicians remixing Freudstein's work sound better than Freudstein remixing other musicians' work.

Sometimes seductive, sometimes frightening, Dissected & Resurrected is, for the most part, a solid collection of energetic dance remixes.
