An electronic odyssey exploring the evolution of the classic industrial sound.
Delta-S is based in southern California and is a collaborative project bringing together at least a dozen artists from across the spectrum of indie and electronic music. A well produced combination of electronic and acoustic instrumentation creates a full, versatile experience that will leave little to be desired for those who appreciate atmospheric music with a darker edge. A number of female vocalists contribute their talent, including DJ Amanda Jones of Drawback and Halo-Tek, Michelle Averna of Ever, and Emma Guy of EMX. Front man Lyte's vocals bear a similarity to those of Nine Inch Nails, which he counts as one of the major influences of Delta-S.
"Damage Control" starts out with a spacey intro, adding a beat that gradually gets harder and harder and then fades when the dreamy male vocals come in, while female backup vocals are added with the second round of lyrics. "Wastelands" is also a good track, with DJ Amanda Jones' hushed vocals accompanied by a basic beat that occasionally adds a hollow, watery tone on the upbeat of the last note of the measure. "My Crusade" changes the tone of the album considerably, moving to a lazier beat and adding guitar as the unembellished male vocals take center stage, while "Waiting for the Sunrise" has a minimal yet orchestral feel, the male vocals supported this time by piano and strings. "Anomaly" brings the beat back, adding a synthetic-sounding effect to the vocals, and then almost becoming a completely different song as more organic elements - drums and guitar - are added and the overall tone becomes hopeful and light. Other highlights are "The Summoning of the Sea" with Lauren Edman's ultra smooth vocal delivery, and "The Phoenix Effect," which reminds of Delerium but has the harder, more solid beat that is characteristic of EBM.
The great strength of this second release by Delta-S is its multifaceted presentation of emotional extremes. The tracks wax overpowering and reflective, angry and pensive, yet each is inspired and impressively assembled. Take the voyage... you might have a story or two to tell when you get back.
