Pissing on the Legacy

A remix companion piece to last year's The Treatment offering up some solid new takes on several great tracks.

Though it has been over six months since the official beginning of SMP's potentially permanent hiatus, Jason Bazinet has rolled out Pissing on the Legacy, a digital-only remix album featuring new takes on most of the tracks from SMP's fifth and potentially final studio alum, The Treatment. Even though the title may suggest an irreverent or caustic treatment of the source material, these remixes from acts both old and new largely do an excellent job of highlighting the strengths of the originals while offering a new way of enjoying them.

Databind's take on "Countdown" is an excellent, complete reworking of the track, giving it a sound similar to something produced by Funker Vogt and fits so naturally it doesn't seem like a remix at all. Diskonnekted also hits a homerun with their version of "Metropolis," giving the song a foreboding technological feel that perfectly complements the vocals of both Bazinet and the guest vocals of Penal Colony's Dee Madden. One of the best mixes of the album is Albatrosse's reworking of "F*** You," giving it a strong driving beat that makes moving with it hard to resist, turning this track into what should be a huge dance floor hit. Though no single track is at all bad, Spinefolder's mix of "I Waste You" does suffer from possibly going for too grandiose a sound, especially when compared to Digital Geist's earlier take on the track, but it is obvious a more mellow tone was desired with this version and it still makes for nice finale to the album.

Though a bit brief with only nine tracks and with one or two being slightly forgettable, Pissing on the Legacy is still a very enjoyable collection of mixes that does not disappoint. Dedicated to fans and friends, this album can be seen as a "thank you" to those who have followed SMP throughout the years, and there can really be no better way of returning the favor than picking up this very enjoyable "swan song" while expectantly awaiting Bazinet's forthcoming non-solo work.
