A dark and ominous experimental treat for the ears.
The first full-length release from Baton Rouge's Torrent Vaccine, Tentative Response is a tour-de-force in experimental music. Managing to be atmospheric and moody as well as intense and lively, Tentative Response is enjoyable on many levels, making it much more universally accessible than your average experimental album. With lush and complex instrumental soundscapes that remind the listener of a grim and gritty version of Meat Beat Manifesto or Coil, Torrent Vaccine has crafted a harsh and unsympathetic world of glitches and harmonies.
The first attention grabbing track of the album comes quickly with "Exude." Recently featured on Glitch Mode / Bit Riot's stellar Gears Gone Wild compilation, "Exude" is an eerie, slow-paced track with a powerful beat that fills the listener with a sense of foreboding for a forthcoming storm of technological doom. The inhuman destruction manifests itself in tracks such as "They Walk" and "Transcend," providing sinister and richly layered tapestries of aural decimation. An oppressive feeling of isolation and gloom seeps out of the album and give tracks like "Pessimist Lo-Fi," "DMF," and "Focus" a morbid beauty that makes them absolutely irresistible. If any weakness were to be pointed out in the album, "Out of the Dark" suffers from the slightly distracting sampling of the distorted, but all too familiar voice of George W. Bush. Unfortunately, this brings the album a little too much into this reality, breaking some of the illusion the album has built.
Tentative Response works marvelously as ambient background music but also has some tracks that could quite easily work on the dance floor as well thanks to the strong rhythms and infectious beats interspersed throughout. With their excellent sound engineering and non-minimalist approach to experimental music, Torrent Vaccine is a wonderfully vibrant and intense addition to the Bit Riot artist lineup that should not be missed.
