Germany's Crisk loudly ventures all over the map with their impressive full-length debut album.
Ushering from Cologne, Crisk was formed in 2003 by front woman Christiane Koch and composer Mike Silence to create "the ultimate cross-over band." With their album Machlaut, they have come very close to the mark, and if nothing else have provided us with a provocative spectrum of sound.
The CD opens with the title track featuring swooping filtered bass and breaks run amuck, as well as an infectious chorus. The second track, the bouncy "Punkelektra" sounds like Nina Hagen assaulting a Fatboy Slim track. Chris Koch's vocals remain infinitely mutable throughout the rest of the album, supplying us with ample amounts of attitude, such as on "Meine Stadt" and "Beute," sensitive sweetness as on "Zarte Gestalten," and even playful joviality on "Datenliebe." Mike Silence's composition and programming show an amazing array of influence, channeling everything from industrial rock on "Out Of My Head," to an accurate guise of Kraftwerk on "Datenliebe."
Overall, this album shines among a good deal of others in the already saturated German electro market; Crisk isn't afraid to make itself stand out by trying to blend its influences instead of following its paint-by-numbers counterparts. Crisk brings a lot to the table, and makes it all easy to swallow.
