Heresy and Dark Mourning

Dark Mourning gives a yet another virtual grab-bag of free music, with the same mixed caliber of quality across the board.
The downside of a good deal of compilations is the ability to cater to everyone's respectable tastes. Even if a compilation colors within the lines of a genre's expectations, certain tracks will harbor an aesthetic that will irritate the ears of many a discerning listener; others will entrance. Dark Mourning's second compilation, Fusion adheres to these oft-noticed traits.
The compilation opens with the anthemic "Salvation" by Angels on Acid, which is quite possibly the best track on the compilation with AoA's trademark psy-trance programming and tight guitar riffs. This sets the mood for the rest of the compilation, which for the most part adheres to an electro mentality. There are quite a few catchy standout tracks in this vein throughout the album, such as T3RR0R 3RR0R's trancelike "Lightstorm," Reaver's "Apocalypse Yesterday," Wolf 359's "Goth Kid," and Hypercomplex's "Dimethyltryptamine" (the latter two utilizing amusing samples from South Park and Grandma's Boy, respectively).
The industrial rock faction is also represented by good tracks from Cynergy 67, "Escape the Violence," Direct Injection's "At the Rate I'm Falling," and the Numan-esque "Kiss the Future" by Virgins Never Die. For fans of gothic electro, KAlt's "Sweet Suicide" is worth a good listen.
The album does have multiple shortcomings, ranging from several unlistenable tracks (Nightmare Simulation's "Homicide Suicide Genocide" with its cheesy programming and poorly mixed vocals, and Dichotomy Engine's arrhythmic "Intronation") to a good deal of tracks that just seem like paint-by-numbers electro. However, the biggest downfall of this offering is the spectrum of MP3 bit rates of the tracks themselves; one can hear everything from 128 to 320 kbps here, and it accounts for a lack of fluidity between the songs offered.
Granted, this is a free download. Many will argue that one gets what they pay for, and one does get quite a few worthwhile tracks here that could be enjoyed either on a PC or a car stereo. One just hopes by their third compilation, Dark Mourning gives us a little more cohesion in the audio quality of the tracks offered.
