Speak Onion completely delivers on its promise of harsh noise, breakbeats and bass lines.
Breakcore is not for everyone. It takes a certain type of individual to truly follow the complexities and frenzy of the sound. For these brave few that seek out breakcore for their listening enjoyment, Speak Onion is the man for the job. Blending the intricacies of breakcore with the sheer power of noise, Metabolor is perfect for the breakcore fanatic.
Speak Onion's style is upfront and harsh and he makes no apologies for it. The music is a prime example of breakcore/noise, an aural assault of breakbeats and ear-bashing sounds. On the Speak Onion MySpace page, he describes his music as "harsh noise, breakbeats, and bass lines. It's kinda simple, really." Contrary to the artist's words, the music is far more than this alone as he incorporates swooping pads, magnificent overtones, and an arsenal of soundscapes to fully build an atmosphere of noise for the breakcore fan. Those not used to the genre will find Metabolor and Speak Onion overwhelming, but those that have had their feet in for a while will be enthralled.
The album opens with a track called "Settling," which is ironic at best; it is an exploding cacophony. A beat can be deciphered around halfway through - latch onto it and the song becomes much easier to get into. The remainder of the album can best be described using the old cliché "organized chaos." Speak Onion brings forth gunfire drums and imminent doom with his music. The shortest track, "Hunter Scavenger" is very straightforward with its beat and rhythm, coupled with fantastic overtones. The longest track, "Many Fewer Branches" is by far Speak Onion's most thought out song of the album, slowly building elements and constructing the piece into a full journey of rhythm and noise. The song's rapid hits over its lazy bass line make for good contrast and keep a good pace.
Speak Onion builds a strong beat section behind a sound that is both atmospheric and jarring at once. Those new to breakcore might want to start softer, but those well-versed in the genre will find Speak Onion a strong player in the field.
