Complex Corrupt provides few surprises, but the unexpected is worth the wait.
The opening track to Evil Minded's Complex Corrupt begins with a cacophony of voices drowned out by a synthesizer, which lends the album an appropriately dark air, and gives way to "Better," which recalls the driving beat and tone of Combichrist. The next few tracks would come under the heading of your usual angry industrial, but there is an underlying energy to the synthesized anthems that makes the overall listen deeper than most albums in a DJ's arsenal. "The Grotesque" is a surprise buried halfway through the album, with an opening that sounds like a cross between carnival music and a game of PacMan, which gives way to an ethereal interlude overlaid with a driving base. Saving the best for the end, "Complex Corrupt" is by far the best track. Short, dark, and sharp, the claws come out in the unrelenting beat in this track, combined with a mournful voice melds with the bass. Unfortunately, the last track has none of the drive of the beginning of the album, and ends the collection on an airy, carefree note that fits like a circular piece to Evil Minded's square musical jigsaw puzzle. The production quality throughout is excellent, and the band even provides the entire album on their web site, free of charge. While it might not be overplayed in clubs anytime soon, Complex Corrupt is well worth the download.
