Society 1
Fearing the Exit

Earache Records

Debauchery and mayhem are just everyday activities when you are a former porn director and full time rock star, likeĀ Matt Zane and the rest of the crew in the heavy metal act, Society 1. Their DVD, Fearing the Exit is a true testament to their dedication to rile up their fans, screw their groupies, and piss off the haters that seem to crawl out of the woodwork when this band hits the stage. Their heavy metal act attracts a variety of fans from headbangers and goths to ICP fanatics, better known as Juggalos, and a lot of people in between. Fearing the Exit is packed with concert footage, backstage goofs, groupie boobs, and music videos. Society 1's onstage antics are reminiscent of Marilyn Manson as Zane does whatever he wants, which includes getting naked and cursing out and provoking the fans that dislike his style. Society 1 has a very dark feel to their music as a lot of their lyrics focus on hatred and pain, but hey, the tracks are great to listen to when you want to get pumped up. Their live shows take this darker angry music and add a physical flair that is energetic with just a tinge of danger added in. The band's fans are perhaps the craziest part about the shows. The real fans seems extremely dedictated to the word of Zane and the women hang on his every word and move (and sometimes hang on something else if they are lucky). A good portion of the footage on this DVD is not really eye-opening as many bands partake in these activities, but it sure is entertaining to watch! One thing that I did take away from viewing this was that Zane seems to be a true rock star and excels at leading the lifestyle of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. The editing of the main documentary, titled One Way to Hell, is erratic as the footage goes from pro shot concert footage of Zane talking to the crowd, to groupies on the tour bus, to a fan bootleg of one of their many songs, to the band goofing around backstage, and back again. The setup of this documentary is fairly typical for music DVD releases, but it covers all of the things that a fan of the band would want to see... glimpses of the band off and on stage as well as other meaty "tit"bits of fun. In addition to the documentary there is a complete concert set (part of which contains about 25 minutes of Zane singing while suspended above the stage by hooks in his back), photshoots, music videos, and other random goodies. Famed Croc Hunter and huge Society 1 fan Steve Erwin commented on this DVD, saying, "Croiky, this DVD is chock-a-block full of good shit. I love boobies... wanna see Terri's?" On the whole, this DVD is a great release from Earache Records and would appeal to fans of heavy metal more so than fans of pure electronic music. I love it just as much as I love electronic music, so it is a perfect cup of tea for me. Check it out if you like seeing bands having fun and groupie boobs!
