Metropolis Records

I liked it the first time, when it was called Embryodead!!! This is yet another album in a long line of albums from :Wumpscut: that doesn't show much growth as an artist. For diehard fans only.

Being one of Metropolis Records’ mainstay artists, :Wumpscut: has returned with their latest release, Evoke. Hardcore fans of the band will revel in this release, while others may not. This album has its moments, but it would take a diehard :Wumpscut: fan to truly enjoy this release.

First off, there isn’t anything new being offered up here. While there may be new recording equipment and sequencers being used by :W: main-man Rudy Ratzinger, the beats he’s created do not sound new or invigorating. Rather, it feels like you’ve just thrown in another :Wumpscut: remix or compilation CD. Having said that, :Wumpscut: shouldn’t be trying to sound like anybody other than :Wumpscut:, but you can only listen to Embryodead so many times, know what I mean?

Evoke starts off with the female vocal-laden track “Maiden.” Jane M. supplies the main vocal tracks for this track, which seems quite odd at first seeing as how most :Wumpscut: tracks feature Rudy’s voice up front in the mix. While being a nice change in pace, this song falls flat and sets the tone for the rest of this disc. Jane M. only sings on two other songs on Evoke, and there is still much to be desired from the following tracks.

Lyrically speaking, you can expect more of the same depressive and corrosive lyrics from :Wumpscut:. The title track “Evoke” is a good example of this. “Innocent like a lamb for me/You can’t feel the danger/You can’t see/Here in the darkness/Evoke.” Indeed, it’s more of the same scenarios that every :Wumpscut: fan has heard about.

Evoke doesn’t really have anything you could shake a stick at until the eighth track, “Breathe.” This is definitely the heaviest track on the disc, and has many danceable beats dropped over crunchy programmed riffs. It’s a good song, and leaves you wondering just what the hell went wrong with the previous seven tracks.

:Wumpscut: closes out Evoke with a pair of remixes, namely “Churist Churist (Recently Deceased Remix)” and “Maiden (Nersoton Vs. :W: Remix).” I generally don’t like it when bands include remixes on a CD when the original versions of those songs are already on the album. This seems like something that is much more suitable to do with a single. In a nutshell, these remixes are decent for as far as :Wumpscut: remixes go, but throwing them on the end of the new CD just seems like a way to add filler material, and quite frankly they sound quite repetitious after having already heard these songs at the beginning of the CD.

All in all, this is a solid :Wumpscut: release, but after a plethora of releases, one would hope that the basic sound of :Wumpscut: would evolve with time. Unfortunately, this has not happened with Evoke, but perhaps that is what many :Wumpscut: fans out there want.
