The French trio’s classic old-school analogue synthpop sound is given a harder rhythmic twist with this EP.
The name Celluloide has long been synonymous with classic old-school bleepy analogue synthpop, but on this, their latest EP, this has been diluted somewhat by a harder rhythmic edge that has led the French trio of Darkleti, Member u-0176, and Patrick Holdwem to coin the term Bodypop not only as the title of this EP but as a name for the new musical sub-genre that this music belongs to.
That’s not to say that this is in any way a radical departure from their old-school style of yore; there’s still plenty of familiar elements abounding, and as such, long term fans of the band shouldn’t find this difficult to get to grips with, especially as Darkleti’s sultry vocals are again on fine form throughout. “Audio Therapy” and “Who is the Angel” offer a more imposing musical backing than usual, both "Who Is The Angel" and "I Am Fine" impress due to their slightly darker melodic styls and effective, memorable choruses, the latter taking the honors for best track. In fact, the only downside is the “ClickNewWeave” remix of “I Am Fine,” which might well boost the band’s mainstream club profile (as it’s obviously intended to do) despite sounding like a million and one other such mixes, and as such, it’s just too nondescript to get excited about and sounds out of place here anyway.
So there you go, a short but sweet taster for the forthcoming album, Passion and Excitements; should be interesting to hear what they do next.
