A goth club favorite is back with a new and exciting album. Expect more romantic lyrics and catchy dance grooves than you can shake your groove thing to.
Like Apop's previous albums, the Black EP capitalizes on their winning mix of romantic lyrics and peppy dance beats. Songs like "Friendly Fire" and the Flipside Club Mix of "In This Together" bring the soulful ballads to the dancehall with sharp and electric music backing them up.
"Shine On," one of the best songs on the album, is the epitome of the goth lyrics of love gone wrong with an instrumental accompaniment of contrasting upbeat music. The blend fits well together throughout the EP making it pleasant to listen to despite (or because of) its less than happy lyrics.
Electronic music has long since been able to disguise sad songs in blankets of electro-pop sounds, but Apop does more than that. The beats lend a sense of urgency to the lyrics, especially noticeable on the "Tuning in to the Frequency of Your Soul (Drugwar)" track. Where another goth crooner might drone on about how treacherous life and love is, Apop shows the listener and then throws the example against the wall for emphasis.
Everything about this album is dire and important, and Apop does not let you forget that from track one to track 10. When the Black EP ends, it is suddenly on an acoustic version of "Until the End of the World" (most likely the slowest track on the album), which gives the listener a moment to come down from the built up tension sewn throughout the rest of the album.
Good for any post-breakup or general dismal circumstance, the Black EP from Apop delivers over 40 minutes of music to drown your sorrows in. Pick up a copy, throw on some black eyeliner, and feel the sorrow seep around you.
